What Are All-on-4 Dental Implants?

A dental implant is made up of three parts: the post, the abutment and the crown. When you are getting a single replacement tooth, the dentist implants one post and attaches an abutment and crown.

With All-on-4 dental implants, a full arch of prosthetic teeth is constructed and attached to four posts on the upper arch and four on the lower. Because the titanium posts used for tooth implants are so strong — stronger even than your natural tooth roots — it is not necessary to place a post for each tooth. Four posts each on the top and the bottom provide an adequate foundation for your replacement teeth.

Are All-on-4s Better Than Dentures?

All-on-4 dental implants are much better than dentures. Dentures sit on your gumline, doing nothing for jaw health. When you are missing teeth, your jawbone begins to shrink, which is why dentures need to be relined every year or two — because the shape of your mouth changes. When you have dental implants, the titanium posts implanted into your jawbone help keep it healthy and strong.

Many people with dentures have a difficult time getting used to wearing them. They can irritate the gums, and denture-wearers live in fear that their dentures will slip or fall out, causing them embarrassment.

This doesn’t happen with All-on-4 replacement teeth. All-on-4 replacement teeth are strong and they function just like your natural teeth. They are fixed permanently in your mouth — they aren’t removable, like dentures, so you never have to worry about their stability.

Additionally, when you get All-on-4 dental implants, you will have no food restrictions. There are a number of foods you can’t eat with dentures such as steak, popcorn, nuts and sticky candy. If these are some of your favorite foods, becoming a denture-wearer can be disappointing.
