Stroke and Gum Disease

Gum Care is Another Way to Reduce

Stroke Risk

Are you in the area of Nashville or Madison and at risk for stroke? If you aren’t looking after your gum health you’re at even greater risk of stroke. Because stroke is a major cause of death, as we age we’re told we can reduce our risk with lifestyle changes related to diet, alcohol consumption, and tobacco consumption. Increasing evidence points to the dangers of gum disease and stroke risk is significantly higher in those with untreated periodontitis.

Dr. Raj, a recognized and well-reviewed Madison dentist, focuses on the mouth-body connection through prevention wherever possible. In addition to offering preventative, restorative, and cosmetic dentist procedures, gum assessments and gum disease treatment are also available.

Lower Your Risk of Stroke, Lower Your Risk of Gum Disease

Unfortunately, a large amount of the population have some degree of gum disease, and the longer it’s left untreated, the more havoc it can cause. Gum pockets grow over time and bacteria can quickly replicate. That bacteria continually enters the bloodstream, increasing your risk of inflammation and putting a great deal of stress on your immune system.

In addition to risking tooth loss, it will also significantly boost your chances of developing heart disease. Additional systemic links include diabetes, osteoporosis, respiratory infections, ulcers, several types of cancers, and more.

By taking care of your gums and by making other positive lifestyle choices such as stopping smoking, eating well, exercising, and making an effort to care for your gums, you will improve your health and longevity. Please make an appointment for a gum assessment, particularly if your doctor has recently talked to you about elevated stroke risk or if you have symptoms of gum disease (bleeding gums, gum discoloration, sore gums, etc.).

How Your Madison, TN Dentist Helps You Reduce Your Stroke Risk

Dr. Raj and the Madison Family Dental team assess your gums at each check-up. If gum disease is present, treatment and periodontal maintenance will be recommended.

If your health has changed or if you’ve had a stroke, talk to your dentist at your next regularly-scheduled appointment about your gum health.

If you do not have a current dentist, we are taking on new patients. If you have signs of gum disease, please contact us right away so that we can help you stop periodontal disease from putting your health at risk.
